A Punch and a Launch

David Barr Kirtley was quoted as saying "Wanting to be a writer and not wanting to be rejected is like wanting to be a boxer and not wanting to get punched."

At the beginning of my more intense writing journey I laughed at that, but I've more recently written it on post-it notes and plastered them all over my desk in an attempt to find humour when receiving yet another rejection.

Unlike every other contest I’ve entered, I recently wrote about something painful from my past. I’d ended my essay by giving thanks to God, for not only delivering me through that circumstance, but also affording me the peace that comes after true forgiveness seeps in.

After losing the contest, as I read the critique, I felt the person judging my writing had missed the point. But later, I reread my entry with that person’s perspective in mind, and I realized something: I hadn’t succeeded in portraying my thoughts as clearly as I should have.

As I acknowledged that, however, I still felt as if I’d been figuratively punched.

As I mulled it all over, I came to some practical conclusions:

First: my pride continues to be way too alive and well. Second: after experiencing a trauma, climbing through it, and finally reaching the other side, it's the miraculous peace sent by the Almighty that's most important--so much more than winning a contest. Third: I have much to learn about writing, and life in general. Fourth: sometimes keeping my private thoughts safely inside my journal may be the better option. (Although, I'm guessing I'll share what I wrote for that contest on this platform, at some point.)

Whether God’s purpose is for us to learn lessons the harder way, or sometimes easier, He is always good. So, so, good - even when getting punched.

Remember: I’m praying for you!

Keep the faith, fight for what’s right, and love Jesus—the way, truth and life!

1 Thessalonians 5: 16-18 (NASB1995) "Rejoice always; pray without ceasing; in everything give thanks; for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus."
