Protect Yourself!
We were getting our old piano tuned a couple of years ago. When I write ‘old’ I don’t mean it had ivory keys, but it had been new when I began taking piano lessons at six years old. So, it’s old enough.
Anyway, we had a man who tunes pianos come into our home, and this is what happened:
He’d only been in the room that housed this instrument for a few minutes when I heard a sharp “ting”, followed by a verbal "whoop". Since the door was closed I waited, hoping he was all right. When only a dead silence continued, I’d just thought of taking a peek in on him right before he poked his head out. He was sporting some mighty fine protective goggles as he smiled and asked, “Everyone okay out here?” Thankfully, he owned a sense of humour.
The string he’d been stretching decided it was too old, had given way, and suddenly all I could picture was his epitaph: ‘died from a piano-related injury at the Janzen house’.
I’ve thought of that a few times since it happened. He looked quite comical with those goggles on. Although they didn’t seem to fit with his occupation, he was clearly proven wise in wearing that protection.
This is a good life lesson.
When it comes to our bodies, and personal space, we should all be protective of ourselves. That’s a good thing. It keeps us safe.
Whether working in health care and wearing garb to protect oneself from contracting a disease, construction workers wearing hard hats to protect their heads from falling debris, or even a piano guy’s goggles, we need to protect ourselves.
Perhaps that’s somewhat easier to do physically, but it’s even more important to do spiritually.
Focussing on God, and the safety He offers, is eternally important. The physical will pass, but our souls will live forever. And forever is … forever. No comparison to our fleeting time on earth.
A dear uncle of mine passed away this week. As I write this I feel melancholy, but at peace as I think of he and my father. They both loved the Lord and loved to sing. I imagine them doing that in heaven right now.
I’ve had a verse of a song looping through my mind as I’ve thought of their reunion this week:
What a day that will be when my Jesus I shall see,
And I look upon His face, the One who saved me by His grace.
When He takes me by the hand and leads me through the Promised Land,
What a day, glorious day that will be!
And an encouraging verse that says it all!
Hebrews 13:5b-6a (NKJV) “For He Himself has said, “I will never leave you nor forsake you.” So we may boldly say: “The LORD is my helper; I will not fear.””
May God bless all who are reading this, with the hope we have in Christ.
Love,
Pattie
