Slow Down In Wonder

I've been thinking about two women lately. At least part of the reason is because of the increased amount of cooking looming ahead. As much as I love a holiday, it usually means more work.
If you don't know the story of Mary and Martha, here's the recap: Jesus goes to their home, and after he's welcomed in, Mary sits nearby and listens to what he has to say. Martha, however, bustles about doing all the work it takes to be the best hostess for their company.
In the story Jesus stops Martha and speaks to her kindly, telling her that she needs to reevaluate her priorities.
Every time I've read or heard this story I've had to smile, because I know exactly which character would be me.
Yes, I'm a Martha - a dig in sort of go-getter who sees her sister just sitting there and thinks, "That isn't right." And then she complains about it to Jesus! That's so little-kiddish, but I get her vibe completely.
If I'm busy I am easily irked by those who aren't, so I can just imagine how Martha felt as she glanced at her sister. I'm sure I'd have thrown a few scowls her way, and mouthed "get in here and help me" a few times over.
Of course, Jesus knew how Martha was wired. He wasn't surprised when she complained, and He didn't come down on her harshly either. He just gave her a nudge, reminding her of what was really important.
Of course, it's recorded that Jesus told Martha that Mary had made a better choice than she. I don't think I'd taken that too well and, notably, it doesn't say what she did after that. Maybe she begrudgingly continued with the work she'd been doing, her face flushed with embarrassment, or perhaps she took His advice and did take a break to visit with her guest. We don't know that, but we do know that Jesus gave her some food for thought.
I can easily become overwhelmed when I've agreed to do too much. I've run around like a fool, but God has never let that continue for too long. Whether it be gentle, or more drastic, I'm so thankful that He's always given me the choice to come back to Him.
As we anticipate celebrating Easter lets remember to stop amidst all our preparations to ponder the wonderful reason for this upcoming weekend. It was, is, and always will be about HIM. Jesus came to earth for one reason - to save mankind. That should make us slow down, stopping in wonder to worship Him.
For the story of the two women I've written about, here's the reference: Luke 10:38-42
For encouragement: Luke 19:10 (NASB1995) "For the Son of Man has come to seek and to save that which was lost."
Blessings be on you and your families this Easter weekend.
Love,
Pattie
